Mediator Certification Requirements:
Certification of mediators is not required in order to practice mediation. This is true for Virginia and nationally. However, many court systems do set standards for mediators of court-referred cases:
Maryland The Court of Appeals sets training standards for general and custody mediators. NVMS training will meet the core requirements, but not necessarily all of the required components. For court referrals, mediators must then apply to their local court. For more information, contact the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) at http://www.courts.state.md.us/macro/index.html or (410) 841-2260.
District of Columbia Mediators must be accepted and trained by the Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Division of the Superior Court of the District of Colombia in order to mediate for the Superior Court. For more information, contact Multi-Door at
